General Statement of Duties

The Geography and Sustainability Department at Salem State University in Massachusetts invites applications for a tenure-track position. We seek a dynamic and collaborative colleague who specializes in the application of advanced geospatial technology and analytics to the understanding of sustainability, environmental change, and land use planning. We also seek someone who is committed to academic excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration.

 

The position includes teaching innovative undergraduate courses in the geospatial technologies, climate change and sustainability. Developing and teaching undergraduate planning courses ranging from city, urban, and regional, to land use, environmental and marine spatial planning is also expected. Research should focus on applying advanced GIS analytics to human-environment systems, focusing on climate and sustainability issues. Willingness to take a leadership role in the graduate Geo-Information Science program a plus.

 

The Geography and Sustainability Department at Salem State University is a dynamic, student-centered, teaching focused department that offers a diverse curriculum with a strong focus on experiential education. Along with degrees in Geography and GIS, the department has concentrations in Environmental Sustainability and Sustainable Tourism. The department’s digital geography laboratory (DGL) is one of the most advanced facilities on campus. Salem State is the Commonwealth's "Civic Engagement University" and the candidate is expected to engage with institutions outside of the University around GIS and planning topics to further this goal.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or ABD in Geography, Land Use Planning, Sustainability or a closely related field 
  • Experience teaching undergraduate geography, sustainability, planning and GIS courses
  • Experience utilizing geospatial technologies to research sustainability, land use planning and/or the environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching in land use planning, sustainability and the geospatial technologies
