General Statement of Duties

The House and Theater Manager will support Salem State’s award-winning Theatre and Speech Communication department and robust academic arts programming. The House and Theater Manager will be responsible for managing and supervising front of house operations for both the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts and the Callan Studio Theatre. They will also review and coordinate all space requests for the two venues. The House and Theater Manager ensures a welcoming and hospitable environment, providing all necessary customer service to create positive, memorable experiences for audience members. This is a 29 hour per week, part-time, on-site, in-person position.

 

Salem State's Theatre department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and offers a BA in Theatre Arts (Performance, Technical Theatre) and a BFA in Theatre Arts (Design, Directing, Performance, Playwrighting, Stage Management, Technical Theatre), and performs in a newly renovated $26 million state-of-the-art theater, The Sophia Gordon Center for Creative & Performing Arts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises all front of house operations in the Sophia Gordon Center and the Callan Studio Theatre for all Theatre department events, other creative and performing arts events coordinated by the director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts, and as scheduling allows University and community events. 
  2. Receives and evaluates space requests, and schedules the Sophia Gordon Center and the Callan Studio Theatre in conjunction with the Chair of the Theatre and Speech Communication Department and the Director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts as required.
  3. Assists with implementing and maintaining safety and building security programs for the Sophia Gordon Theatre, the Callan Studio Theatre and supports spaces in coordination with the University Facilities Department and University Police.
  4. Supervises, trains and schedules student and volunteer front of house and box office staff and serves as professional staff coverage for all student performance call times.
  5. Ensure safety and comfort of audience members by preparing the house and enforcing proper safety and security regulations and policies.
  6. Oversees audience services and solves any problems or issues with patrons that arise.
  7. Coordinates performance timelines with stage management, including house opening, intermission, and post-show events.
  8. Coordinates lobby signage and updates information on electronic marquee.
  9. Coordinates ADArequests.
  10. Maintains the appearance of the lobby and all public areas; communicates with Facilities as necessary to ensure a clean environment.
  11. Opens and closes the facilities as assigned and performs a full venue sweep after each event to make sure all proper doors are locked and front of house operations are clear for the evening.
  12. Maintains attendance records for student house staff and compiles and distributes Front of House Show Reports.
  13. Maintains box office equipment, including hearing assistance devices and walkie-talkies.
  14. Coordinates box office cash and cheque deposits with the Director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts.
  15. Enforce all theatre policies regarding photography, food and beverages, smoking, etc.
  16. Provides leadership in emergency situations,e.g., building evacuations, shelter in place, weather emergencies and similar.
  17. Document all incidents, emergencies, or maintenance problems with an incident report, accident report, or work order.
  18. Attends Theatre and Speech Communication Department Production Meetings as needed.
  19. Coordinates program content for production playbills.
  20. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic background.
  21. Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles.
  22. Serves as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  1. One year of professional theatre experience
  2. Experience and ability to work productively under time pressures and meet deadlines
  3. Experience in customer service, public safety, and event management
  4. Must be able to think and react quickly and creatively in unique situations requiring professionalism and composure

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  2. Previous experience in a performing arts venue
  3. Excellent interpersonal and written, oral and visual communication skills
  4. Demonstrated scheduling and organizational skills and the ability to work with various user groups
  5. Strong computer skills and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem MA, which requires a flexible schedule that includes regular evening and weekend hours. Must have access to reliable transportation.

 

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.
