General Statement of Duties

University police is seeking applicants for an on-site, in-person Institutional Security Officer I (ISO-I). The ISO-I makes periodic rounds and security checks of buildings and grounds; conducts surveillance of assigned areas; identifies the extent of violations and takes appropriate action; takes steps to remedy or control emergency situations; prepares and reviews a variety of information-gathering forms and reports; inspects firefighting and other safety apparatus; provides direction and general information to the public; and performs related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to protect and safeguard the buildings and grounds of a state facility and the lives of its residents, staff, and the general public. Incumbents of positions at this level receive direct supervision from Institution Security Officers-II or other employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work, and review performance through observation and reports for conformance to all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.


Hours: TBD by shift bidding process; subject to change according to departmental needs. Must be available for off-shift overtime, including compulsory callbacks.
Break: TBD by shift bidding process.
Salary: $38,588.16 annually/$742.08 weekly

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Patrol the buildings and grounds of the University on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure the security of buildings and grounds and to guard against trespass, theft, damage to property, fire, and injury
  2. Enforce university parking and safety regulations
  3. Protect state and federal constitutional guarantees
  4. Facilitate the movement of people and activities
  5. Identify and address potential problems affecting the University and law enforcement
  6. Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community
  7. Promote and preserve civil order
  8. Operate electronic parking ticketing devices and jumpstart devices
  9. Perform specific duties and responsibilities as required by the Chief of Police or designee
  10. Responsible for the efficient performance of all duties in conformance with the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and orders contained in all manuals issued by the Department or law
  11. Other duties as assigned within the Institution Security Officer (ISO-I) classification
  12. Comply with the requirements of a campus security authority (CSA) under the Clery Act
  13. Comply with requirements as a responsible employee (RE) under Title IX

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

None

 

Special Requirements:

  1. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. College degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or related field
  2. Law enforcement, security, or military background
  3. Effective oral and written communication skills
  4. Ability to gather information, maintain composure in emergencies, and exercise sound judgment
  5. Interpersonal skills to interact with individuals under stress and from diverse backgrounds
  6. Knowledge of and experience with the application of relevant laws, regulations, and procedures
  7. Experience in handling confidential information 
  8. Experience with and proficiency in record-keeping, report preparation, and interpreting documents

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem, MA.

 

Institution Security Officers work in and around the grounds of a state facility; work alone; work outside in all weather conditions; are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; and are subjected to verbal and physical abuse in a job-related setting; work in a high crime area; lift heavy objects or persons; work with people who are under physical or psychological stress; and work varied shifts.
