General Statement of Duties

Maintains buildings and related structures in all residence halls by applying carpentry procedures and techniques using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc. Performs custom woodworking and finishing carpentry procedures and techniques including use of specialized tools and equipment. Checks buildings to identify the need for carpentry repairs. Interprets and draws sketches or layouts of work to be performed. Erects and dismantles work from staging, ladders and scaffolding. Directs work of assigned Carpenter I's, Trades Workers and student employees. Performs related work as required.  

 

Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm, Saturday and Sunday off

Break: 11:30am-12pm

Salary: $51,201.80 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains campus buildings and related structures by applying carpentry procedures and techniques using associated power and hand tools to construct, alter compound sheetrock, patch, tape and repair walls. Repairs or replaces screens, stairs, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, locks, mail slots, handrails and ramps. Installs cove base and ceramic tiles.
  2. Applies customized carpentry-related procedures and techniques and uses specialized woodworking tools and equipment to provide required finishing to products.
  3. Checks work site needing repairs and reports results back to supervisor for additional instruction if needed.
  4. Determines necessary materials and supplies to complete work.
  5. Provides instruction to subordinates regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alteration and the scheduling of work.
  6. Performs structural repairs, alterations or demolition, such as lowering ceilings, paneling; preparing surface for plaster on cement work, studding, plastering walls, cracks in floors, windows, taping joints on sheetrock; re-cementing and replacing Formica tops, cabinets and shelving.
  7. Directs the work of assigned Carpenter I's, Trades Workers, student employees, and provides technical assistance to other employees.
  8. Contacts and works with various contractors (plumbing, electrical, sales representatives, etc.).
  9. Stocks F350 van with proper parts, and maintains service with use of Procard and PHH gas card.
  10. Uses basic computer programs and skills such as email, work orders and other various departmental computer software.
  11. Performs minor plumbing repair flushometers, drains, faucets, electrical repair, switches, lights, appliances such as stove and refrigerators, service cleaning equipment and snow equipment.
  12. Monitors energy management system.
  13. Makes emergency repairs as needed.
  14. May be assigned as essential personnel during emergency or inclement weather.
  15. Interprets or draws up sketches, patterns, blueprints or layouts of work to be done.
  16. Builds and/or installs kitchen islands/counters, counter tops with cabinets; builds large storage closets, repairs furniture, removes walls to enlarge work area, removes and alters interiors/life building to accommodate for new office space.
  17. Repairs and installs furniture, floor coverings such as tile floors, wood, linoleum, also ceiling tiles; installs glass, locks and hardware, windows and doors, hinges and sash chains.
  18. Assists in obtaining materials pertaining to university business, such as lumber, locks, hardware and shades. Assists in moving heavy material and equipment, etc.
  19. Performs some mechanical repairs; makes signs, engraved or painted.
  20. Maintains removable core system and cuts keys as necessary.
  21. Operates rigging for carpentry duties, cuts and drills metals and metal wrapping, installs caulking and waterproofing felt, cores holes in cement.
  22. Performs other related work such as working from ladders and staging areas as well as framing pictures, window and door screens; drilling holes; cleaning and sharpening of power hand tools.
  23. Assists other skilled trades in the performance of their work as required; performs some masonry work.  

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

 

Substitutions:

  1. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational or vocational school at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, or cabinetmaking may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.

License/Certifications Required:

Based upon assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.  

 

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem, Massachusetts.

 

Carpenters work unsupervised; stand, walk for prolonged periods of time; lift and carry heavy materials and equipment; work in all types of weather; work varied shifts; are exposed to hazards of chemicals, glues, solvents, and noxious fumes, dust, high noise levels, ladders, staging and scaffolding at heights greater than 10 feet.
