General Statement of Duties

The Assistant Director for Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Wellness will serve as the Head Athletic Trainer and is responsible for directing and coordinating all of the activities and personnel of the athletic training room. This Assistant Director will oversee and assist in providing medical services to the athletic programs and the students of Salem State University, and develop and oversee a comprehensive student-athlete wellness support program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the overall development, implementation, and assessment of sports medicine services, including medical care and daily operation of athletic training room which includes prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation for intercollegiate athletes at Salem State University.
  2. Oversees student-athlete wellness programming with a focus on mental health, strength and conditioning, diversity and inclusion, and nutrition.
  3. Presence at home athletic contests and travel coverage with sports teams as assigned.
  4. Assist Team Physician in weekly athletic training room Doctor's visits.
  5. Onboard, supervise and mentor graduate athletic training students (internal and external to SSU community)
  6. Continually update software program that includes athletes' medical files, injury reports, daily
    treatments and rehabilitation programs.
  7. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious,
    gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  8. Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles.
  9. Coordinate referrals with team physicians' office staff for athletes needing specialists.
  10. Coordinate with health services in updating athletes' medical records and pre-participation physical examinations.
  11. Work with health insurance companies in coordinating athletes' care and covered medical
    services, and serve as primary contact for secondary insurance carrier.
  12. Counsel athletes and refer to specialists as needed.
  13. Responsible for relaying drug testing and sports performance supplement questions and education on these subject to athletes, coaches and staff.
  14. Oversee Equipment Room – reconditioning of equipment and certification for use by team
  15. Organize and supervise strength and conditioning programs for student athletes
  16. Responsible for performance evaluation of Staff Assistant Athletic Trainers.
  17. Supervise and coordinate First Aid and Adult CPR w/ AED training for coaches and staff as requested by Athletic Director.
  18. Supervises athletic training students during clinical rotations and serve as an approval clinical instructor.
  19. Evaluate and sign off clinical proficiencies and competencies for athletic training students.
  20. Serve as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate.
  21. Oversee athletic training services for summer sports camps as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training
  • 5 years previous experience in a college or comparable co-educational setting  
  • NATA certified
  • Massachusetts Licensure or eligible to gain license
  • First Aid & CPR certified

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Public Health, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field 
  • Three years experience in supervision of athletic training staff and student staff
  • CPR instructor certification

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position which requires a flexible work schedule. Seasonal evenings, weekends, and travel are required.
