  • General Statement of Duties

    Reporting to the associate vice president for enrollment management, the director of financial aid is part of a collaborative team within the enrollment management division and is responsible for the leadership and management of financial aid programs totaling over $80 million annually. The director coordinates all available budget, personnel, and technical resources with federal, state, and institutional aid programs in order to deliver effective financial aid services to students. The director provides leadership in the development and implementation of all financial aid policies, programs and services, the coordination of awards and disbursements, and compliance reporting for all federal, state, and institutional programs. 

    Duties and Responsibilities

    1. (E) Develops annual goals and objectives for the financial aid office
    2. (E) Evaluates programs, processes and services of the department to ensure quality, efficiency and effectiveness of operations
    3. (E) Identifies and implements needed revisions to program processes and procedures to ensure compliance with program certification, rules, regulations, guidelines, state and federal laws and University policies and procedures
    4. (E) Collaborates with the executive director of the One Stop Student Services Center and the executive director of enrollment management operations to provide excellent customer service to all students
    5. (E) Financial aid operations and systems functions are managed and performed within the Enrollment Management Operations group. The director of financial aid is responsible for collaborating with this operations group to ensure that all technology issues related to financial aid processing and web self-service are implemented and operational, including regulatory updates, patches and fixes, upgrades and enhancements to Oracle SIS software
    6. (E) Manages all personnel functions in the department related to recruitment, training, assignment of responsibilities, supervision, evaluation and financial aid professional development
    7. (E) Manages an office budget and various financial aid program budgets totaling in excess of $80 million
    8. (E) Administers all federal, state, institutional and private financial aid programs including the management of awards and disbursement
    9. (E) Coordinates financial aid activities with other offices and departments including admissions, university registrar, student accounts, ITS, and academic affairs among others to ensure quality service to students to promote and support recruitment, retention and student success
    10. (E) Advises the AVP & university on the impact of proposed and actual legislative and regulatory changes and leads the effort in revising university policies, initiatives and processes accordingly
    11. (E) Sets institutional aid strategy and policies in partnership with external government agencies (e.g. the U.S. Department of Education and the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education), and third-party vendors (such as student loan providers). Manage on-going positive relationships with these entities
    12. (E) Develop a communication and outreach strategy to ensure that students and parents/guardians are informed about and understand financial aid requirements, policies and procedures as well as the cost of a Salem State education and available financing options. Represents the university in financial aid matters to the local community including students, prospective students, parents, high school personnel, other governmental and social organizations, and news media
    13. (E) Maintains active affiliations with professional associations, technology user groups, and other organizations to ensure updated knowledge of best practices, compliance, and government regulations are implemented
    14. Serves on committees as assigned by the President and Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management
    15. Regularly utilizes student success management tools
    16. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, and religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds as well as sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
    17. Serve as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate
    18. Perform other duties as assigned


    Required Qualifications:


    1. Bachelor's degree required, preferably in student personnel, higher education administration or a related discipline
    2. Experience leading/managing student financial aid staff in a large complex environment
    3. At least seven years of financial aid and supervisory experience working in a financial aid office in a post-secondary institution
    4. Experience with technology tools necessary for financial aid operations and student success
    5. Comprehensive knowledge of all federal financial aid programs and knowledge of state aid programs
    6. Evidence of successful collaboration with student service offices

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Master's degree
    2. Ten years of experience in a financial aid office in a post-secondary institution with at least five years of supervisory responsibility
    3. Demonstrated knowledge of computer technology and electronic processing
    4. Proven ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with students, faculty, and community, verbally and in writing
