    The LEAD Office is a newly created structure within student life that will allow for synergy between student involvement and diversity education. The director is a twelve-month position responsible for the planning, organization and direction of this comprehensive student engagement office that compromises cultural clubs, identity based groups and cultural centers (Women’s Center and Diversity Center).  The LEAD Office combines two previously separate offices – student involvement and activities and diversity and multicultural affairs. The director collaborates with various campus partners, student groups and external constituents to provide educational and social programming through a social justice frame. 


    The office oversees all student groups, clubs and organizations, providing guidance and enforcement of policies and protocol.  The director provides leadership regarding the use of university funds and resources to produce efficient efforts at building and producing an engaged student body. The ideal candidate will be a committed professional with knowledge about race, racial identity, intersectionality, and possess a commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations.

    Duties and Responsibilities


    • Responsible for budget preparation, budget administration, budget contract, and other matters related to the procurement of events, programs and services


    • Provide direction and supervision to the professional and support staff
    • Oversees the selection of professional staff, evaluate department personnel and makes recommendations for appointment and other personnel actions
    • Trains and evaluates professional and paraprofessional staff


    • Provide the vision and oversee the execution of a combined leadership and social justice framework applied through every facet of student involvement and engagement including clubs, Greek life, program council and cultural centers
    • Ensure an active and engaged student body through regular programs, services and educational opportunities as the primary programming unit of student life
    • Oversee the planning and coordination of comprehensive leadership development and education for students at various developmental levels with a focus on social justice
    • Oversee the planning and coordination of campus-wide programming and large scale events in collaboration with staff, faculty, students and administrators with a special focus on nights and weekends
    • Collaborates with campus partners to lead a fair, developmental and inclusive student leader selection process
    • Conducts assessment activities based on learning outcomes to evaluate programs and services
    • Available for response to crisis and emergency on an on-going basis
    • In collaboration with community standards, enforce university policy with campus organizations
    • Provide general support, development and advisement to all student organizations including trainings for student leaders and organization advisors
    • Oversee the university recognition process for student organizations and interest groups
    • Oversee student organization travel policies and procedures as it relates to conferences, overnight and day trips
    • Assist with the administration of contracts for all performer, exhibition and service vendors


    • Work with campus partners to orchestrate a comprehensive support plan for diverse students including; students of color, students across and outside the gender and sexual orientation spectrum, and otherwise marginalized students
    • Collaborate with the chief diversity officer to proactively address and respond to university-wide issues of diversity and social justice that affect students
    • Provide leadership to ensure that bystander and Safe Zone training is executed across campus
    • Inform the programmatic, educational and leadership development opportunities on issues of diversity
    • Establish positive relationships and outreach to students of color on campus. Support student organizations such as Latin American Student Organization, Multicultural Student Association and Urban Arts Theatre
    • Develop, initiate and produce annual week-long programs including Martin Luther King Jr. Week, convocation, leadership receptions
    • Cultivate the leadership growth and development of students from orientation to graduation. Engage young alumni of color to partner and mentor undergraduate students to success
    • Support the expansion of multicultural understanding on campus through sponsored forums, presentations, and activities
    • Serve as the primary consultant to university departments and liaison between students and departments on management policies and operating practices
    • Collaborate with department staff to produce events and programs that increase student engagement


    • In cooperation with wellness cluster, maintain a food pantry and resources for students who have circumstances that put them at risk for attrition; food insecurity, low financial or emotional support structures and first time college students
    • Execute programs and services that advocate for and address the needs of other special populations including commuters and off-campus students
    • Collaborates with student life operations to ensure the maintenance and successful operation of the Ellison Campus Center
    • Partners with student life operations in the administration and ongoing evaluation of a student event approval and room reservation process
    • Provides staffing, management, scheduling and programming for the Diversity and Cultural Enrichment Center


    Required Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will have a master’s degree in student affairs, student development, counseling or related field of study and 5-7 years of experience developing leadership experiences and advising multicultural, and/or student- clubs and organizations and student-led initiatives. The director will have experience translating goals into strategic priorities and demonstrate effective experience working with diversity, facilitating social justice and diversity focused programs.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    Prior experience in an office of diversity, student activities, leadership or multicultural and diversity programs preferred. A strong understanding of student development theory as it pertains to developing experiences that undergraduate students of color experience.
