  • General Statement of Duties

    The Job & Career Specialist plays a vital role in the success of a student’s participation in the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (MAICEI) program at SSU.  This individual helps students understand themselves as learners, teach students how to advocate for themselves, and provide natural supports, as minimally as possible.  The Job & Career Specialist will support enrolled students in making the transition to college life. 

    The job of an MAICEI program Job & Career Specialist is a part-time position.  The Job & Career Specialist, District Liaison, and MAICEI Program Coordinator are key staff members who work together to develop a community conducive to student success by encouraging positive behaviors.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Consult with students, liaisons & college staff on connecting students’ college and personal goals with employment
    • Set Career Goals
    • Facilitate job coaching meetings 1:1 which will enable students to seek, plan, prepare and coordinate internship opportunities on the Salem State University campus that best meet their Career Goals
    • Facilitate monthly Career Workshops geared towards building skills needed to compete for competitive paid employment
    • Develop collaborative relationships with the campus community; this will enable the MAICE students with the opportunity to have internship experiences
    • Assist Ed Coaches so they are able to provide assistance with internships
    • Provide consultation to student, family members and District Liaisons who are looking to establish employment opportunities in the students’ home community
    • Work with students to create and develop a Professional Career Portfolio
    • Assist students to obtain and maintain quality work that meets their vocational goals
    • Maintaining data log of all MAICE students’ assessments as part of their interning experience; using the Massachusetts Work-Based Learning Plan
    • Support individual students with intellectual/developmental disabilities, ages 18-22, in inclusive postsecondary educational settings.
    • Attend new student campus tours, orientation, Ed coach meetings, student activities and professional development trainings.
    • Help students plan and practice personal safety techniques, self-advocacy and assertiveness skills, while allowing students to be as independent as possible in the workplace environment.
    • Participate in Career Check-in meetings.
    • Attend and assist students during all computer lab Career Workshops
    • Maintain weekly MAICEI Internship Ed Coach Log Sheet
    • Accompany and support student at weekly internship as discussed during Career check-in meetings
    • Communicate and relate in a positive manner to students, college faculty/staff, district staff and families.
    • Check email daily.
    • Support MAICEI students in management of Person-Centered Plans.
    • Participate in MAICEI Program End-of-Year Celebration.

     

    Qualifications

     

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor degree in related field
    • One to three years working with students with intellectual disabilities

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Special education teaching background in a public school setting
