  • General Statement of Duties

    The assistant director, LEAD is responsible for the coordination of social justice education and outreach programs for students, faculty and staff that engage the community and foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. The assistant director oversees the day-to-day operations of the Center for Diversity & Cultural Enrichment, and assists in hiring, supervising, and evaluating student employees. The assistant director will facilitate collaborative partnerships with a variety of constituents and assist student groups and organizations with educational programming and resources.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Serves on organizational, departmental, and campus committees as needed or required; serves as liaison between students and university personnel in a fair and impartial manner regarding student rights and regulations
    2. Works to strengthen programs and services offered through the Center for Diversity & Cultural Enrichment
    3. Assists with formal office reviews, annual reports, and program assessments
    4. Collaboratively supervises graduate interns and practicum students
    5. Manages the daily use of the Center for Diversity & Cultural Enrichment space; including processing work orders, ordering supplies, and reservation calendar
    6. Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures
    7. Assist in responding to on campus and classroom disruptions reported by university students, faculty and staff as it relates to multicultural and LGBTQ students
    8. Participates in the university's strategic planning and implementation of short- and long-term goals and objectives for the Enrollment Management and Student Life Division
    9. Participate in centralized processes such as paraprofessional selection (student staff), professional staff hiring, orientation, etc.
    10. Develops and implements appropriate social justice and diversity focused programs and activities for the campus community related to diversity; provides advocacy, crisis support, information and referral regarding multicultural and LGBTQ inclusion
    11. Provides individual assistance to underrepresented students in matters pertaining to the quality of their education
    12. Provides leadership for diversity and inclusion-related committees, advocacy efforts related professional development opportunities at the university
    13. Responsible for curriculum design and facilitation of our Bystander Intervention Program and Safe Zone program
    14. Assist in fostering a healthy, secure and supportive environment for students that integrates the intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional development of students
    15. Develop and implement communication strategies to inform students of upcoming events
    16. Utilize MAP-Works in support of student success
    17. Perform other duties as assigned


    Required Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in student affairs, student development, counseling or related field of study and at least three to four years of experience developing leadership experiences and advising multicultural, and/or student- clubs and organizations and student-led initiatives. Experience in cultivating and executing diversity focused educational campus-wide programs will be necessary for all applicable candidates. Candidate should demonstrate an inclusive style and a passion for working with a diverse student population. The Assistant Director will need to be able to work evenings and weekends and demonstrate effective experience working with diversity, facilitating social justice and diversity focused programs.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    A strong understanding of student development theory as it pertains to developing experiences that support the needs and interests of multicultural and LGBTQ student identity groups is preferred. The candidate will exhibit demonstrated knowledge of best practices in diversity, multicultural and LGBTQ affairs; possess the ability to balance student advocacy and overall institutional goals and a successful track record of collaborating effectively across departments. Additionally, preference will be given to those candidates who also possess a demonstrated awareness and knowledge of identity based student needs, leadership development techniques, strong facilitation skills, and the implementation of effective cultural competency building initiatives.
