  • General Statement of Duties

    The associate director, alumni relations works under the direction of the senior director, institutional advancement to maintain, develop and implement events and projects designed to expand and support alumni outreach, annual giving participation, and to support the cultivation and stewardship efforts of the development area and the Salem State University Foundation.

    Duties and Responsibilities

      1. (E) Responsible for the overall leadership and development, coordination and implementation of all alumni programming and events
      2. (E) Working with the senior director, provides executive support for the Alumni Association Board of Directors to recruit, motivate and educate volunteers
      3. (E) Responsible for the development and management of the alumni relations and alumni association annual and strategic plans and associated reporting
      4. (E) Maintains the alumni relations and alumni association budgets
      5. (E) Supports and advances the strategic plan of the university, the institutional advancement area and the Alumni Association
      6. (E) Establish and build relationships with a wide range of local, regional, national and international alumni; maintain regular communication with alumni via personal visits, telephone, electronic and written communications (social media platforms, emails, etc.) to increase alumni outreach and engagement
      7. (E) Collaborates with development and annual giving and appropriate faculty and university administrators to develop and implement cultivation and fundraising programs and initiatives strategically designed to enhance and expand outreach and engagement of leadership boards, affinity groups, reunion classes, students, and university employees (academic and administrative departments)
      8. (E) Researches and writes materials for alumni publications, newsletters, email blasts, web pages, event invitations, promotional materials and other institutional advancement publications as assigned
      9. (E) Manages the alumni association travel program
      10. (E) Responsible for maintaining and growing existing affinity benefit programs that provide revenue to the association
      11. (E) Responsible for hiring, managing, training and mentoring of staff and student employees in the alumni relations department
      12. (E) Supervises professional administrative staff (APA), support staff (AFSCME), contracted and student employees
      13. Serves on committees as assigned by the area vice president or president
      14. Supports the mission, goals and objectives of the area of Institutional Advancement
      15. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic and religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds
      16. Serves as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate and works with on campus student groups
      17. Performs duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Institutional Advancement
      18. Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor's degree
    2. Four plus years’ experience in alumni relations and/or development.
    3. Three plus years’ experience managing leadership volunteers and/or board of directors.  

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • Prior experience working in Higher Education
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues, alumni, students and external organizations
    • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for identifying, cultivating and motivating volunteers
    • Demonstrates strong writing, planning and organizational skills
    • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
    • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve goals.
    • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
    • Strong time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
    • Knowledge with alumni and development databases (ex: Raiser’s Edge) and strong computer skills in programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds.

     

    Ability to travel – drive locally and fly nationally, at least 25% of the time and work evenings and weekends as needed.
