  • General Statement of Duties

    Salem State University, located 15 miles north of Boston, is one of the largest state universities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and serves as an important partner in the economic, cultural and intellectual vitality of the greater north-of-Boston region.  Salem State provides a diverse community of learners a high quality, student-centered education that prepares them to contribute responsibly and creatively to a global society.

    The School of Graduate Studies and The School of Continuing and Professional Studies both provide a high quality, education within a personalized adult-learning environment that emphasizes leadership, intellectual challenge and professional relevance. Students develop skills through a rigorous foundation preparing them to succeed and promote professionalism in an academically challenging environment. Students apply what they learn in the classroom to their work and develop professional networks with faculty and area workplaces.     Duties and Responsibilities

    Reporting to the provost and academic vice president, the dean of graduate and professional studies is responsible for leading the university to greater prominence through the pursuit of excellence in research, education and professional programs. The dean is responsible for the academic and research missions of the schools including review and approval of all academic programs and policies, as well as the appointment, promotion and development of a diverse faculty and staff.  The dean is also responsible for the overall quality of programs, and expected to develop initiatives in the schools that contribute to the university’s strategic plan. The dean will collaborate as a member of the provost’s leadership team and function as a member of the president’s leadership cabinet.

    Qualifications

    Required qualifications for the successful candidate include an earned doctorate with the scholarly requirements, teaching experience and scholarly contributions commensurate to a faculty member with tenure at the rank of professor, and demonstrated ability to establish and leverage relationships with community agencies, government and other constituencies.

     

    In addition, a leader is sought who demonstrates evidence of visionary leadership in organizational and change management; experience designing and implementing new programs and initiatives; proven ability to lead a complex organization while articulating a clear vision and goals for the future; and thoughtful organization and deployment of resources and effective fund-raising methods in order to achieve strategic ends. The ideal candidate has documented experience with program accreditation requirements along with the ability to lead within a collective bargaining environment. Further, the ideal candidate has a creative and entrepreneurial mindset.
