  • General Statement of Duties

    The admissions counselor will be responsible for successfully recruiting and enrolling students to Salem State University. To achieve these goals, the incumbent will review applications for undergraduate admission, conduct recruitment travel, as well as advise and counsel prospective students, guidance counselors, and other constituencies regarding the admission process and academic programs. The incumbent will be responsible for meeting individual and team enrollment goals.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    1. (E) Plans and implements a student recruitment plan to foster the development and conversion of prospective student inquiries to application and enrollment. Includes both transfer and freshman, as well as evening and day students
    2. (E) Participates in the development and execution of a recruitment plan to foster development and conversion of prospective student inquiries for undergraduate programs
    3. (E) Represents the university at various activities for the purpose of recruiting students i.e. Open House events, college night programs, high school visits, mini high school fairs, and all other on and off campus related events
    4. (E) Responsible for reviewing admission applications, academic criteria and rendering admissions decisions in a timely fashion. Applications are reviewed based on admissions territories and or student academic program or plan. Directly involved in the application management, completion and conversion of students. Tracking of applicants within one’s territory is required. Completes input of data into student administration systems relative to student’s academic profile and admissions decisions for assigned applicant pool
    5. (E) Responsible for the organization and scheduling of assigned travel schedule with a designated geographic territory. Arrangements to be made include scheduling high school visits and all travel, as well as managing travel by analyzing data and having an in depth knowledge of the territory
    6. (E) Serves as the admissions liaison with the admissions ambassadors
    7. (E) Provides support for program planning targeting guidance professionals, educational consultants, community, religious and cultural programs, and prospective students (regional reception programs, local high school days, local information sessions, major exploration days, open house programs and other admissions activities). Works closely with the admissions team to nurture community outreach geared toward developing relationships with organizations to increase diversity
    8. (E) Meets with prospective students and conducts group information sessions to relay information regarding enrollment, academic programs, and other university duties
    9. May serve in a specialized area of recruitment, including, but not limited to: transfer students, community based organizations, diverse students, adult learners, athletic students, and honors students and/or other targeted group
    10. Performs other duties as assigned relative to supporting admissions recruitment plan of the university with an overall goal of increasing new student enrollment
    11. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds and sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
    12. Serves as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

     

    1. Bachelor's degree
    2. Two years of experience in higher education
    3. Experience working both independently and as part of a team, in order to meet project and task deadlines
    4. Must have access to reliable transportation; must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and have appropriate auto insurance coverage throughout tenure as an admissions counselor

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Three years of experience in an admissions office
    2. Fluency in Spanish
    3. Excellent public speaking, interpersonal and written communication skills
    4. Possess excellent technical skills with internet applications, social media and Microsoft Office suite
    5. Strong critical decision-making ability and time management skills
    6. Knowledgeable of Salem State University's programs
    7. Knowledge of/experience with admissions processes in U.S. higher education; understanding of Salem State admissions practices a plus
    8. Experience with a CRM (TargetX/Salesforce) and/or PeopleSoft Student Information System
    9. Experience in the development of school counselor and community college counselor relationships
    10. Experience developing trainings or presentations for diverse populations

    Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting and standing, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds. 

     

    Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends; travel required (annual travel is estimated at approximately 8-10 weeks per year).
