  • General Statement of Duties

    The marketing and creative services department seeks a creative, self-motivated digital content specialist to maintain and further develop the university’s website content and social media presence. In partnership with offices and departments across campus, this position is responsible for updating current web content and developing new content, maintaining consistent adherence to style guide standards, ADA compliance guidelines, and SEO best practices. As part of the social media team, this position will develop and execute social media campaigns across multiple platforms in support of university initiatives.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the web and social media manager, the digital content specialist will:

    1. (E) Create new content and edit existing content for salemstate.edu, ensuring timeliness, ADA compliance, adherence to best practices and branding guidelines, and search engine optimization
    2. (E) Review, edit and approve content submissions to salemstate.edu from campus partners
    3. Advise campus colleagues on content strategy across official digital platforms
    4. Meet with academic areas to improve the presence of their programs on salemstate.edu
    5. (E) Develop web stories and profiles to highlight the Salem State experience and celebrate the university community
    6. Collaborate with information technology services to specify and test new website features
    7. (E) Develop social media content across various platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube
    8. Work with colleagues to develop social media posts and campaigns in support of the university’s student recruitment and retention efforts
    9. (E) Monitor social media mentions and respond to questions or concerns when appropriate, connecting with university offices to resolve community member concerns when possible; monitoring responsibilities continue beyond business hours on a rotating basis
    10. (E) Record and review social media engagement metrics, modifying strategies to respond to changing trends and feed algorithms
    11. (E) Create user documentation for new and existing projects
    12. Work on additional writing tasks and other clerical duties that support department needs

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, technical writing, or related field
    • Two years of professional experience in managing online content and operations utilizing at least one content management system
    • Experience using social media platform for business and the appropriate content guidelines for each
    • Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills for online audiences
    • Experience in video content creation and/or paid social advertising

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Attention to detail and ability to check one’s own work and the work of others
    • Ability to work quickly, multi-task and prioritize
    • Demonstrated interest in public higher education
    • Familiarity with the AP writing style
    • Experience working with faculty, administrators and students from a wide variety of cultures
