General Statement of Duties

The Center of International Education at Salem State University is seeking a dynamic and passionate coordinator of study abroad.   The coordinator is responsible for the development and administration of all study abroad programs at Salem State University and reporting to the Center’s leadership.  

 

Salem State is a four-year comprehensive state university with a liberal arts core, and is committed to providing our students with the opportunities to learn and grow through global awareness and opportunities. The study abroad coordinator will manage study abroad and global education programs. This will include providing international program advising for incoming and outgoing study abroad students; administering all aspects of study abroad and exchange programs; and assisting in the implementation of study abroad-related orientations, presentations, and publicity. The coordinator will also provide critical support and leadership in the development and administration of faculty-led short-term programs on campus, and will be involved in activities with international students, visiting scholars, and faculty on campus.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. (E) Develop and implement all study abroad programs including applications, academic advising and credit transfer, housing, visas, health concerns, and other program specific requirements
  2. (E) Advise incoming and outgoing study abroad students, family members, and faculty through orientations and re-entry programs
  3. (E) Collaborate with CIE leadership in preparing, implementing, and administering faculty-led travel-study programs
  4. (E) Provide leadership in marketing and outreach for all education abroad programs; maintain website and social media platforms in conjunction with CIE leadership and as approved by university marketing
  5. (E) Collaborate with campus offices, i.e., registrar, financial aid, residence life, admissions, academic advising, to facilitate issues related to students studying abroad
  6. (E) Participate on the campus-wide risk management committee to ensure safe travel and minimize any risk related to international travel
  7. (E) Maintain campus study abroad database, and prepare annual goals and annual reports related to study abroad
  8. Plan and organize an on-campus study abroad fair each academic semester
  9. Represent the CIE and Study Abroad programs at professional meetings and conferences
  10. Serve as an advisor to the International Student Association
  11. Demonstrates sensitivity to students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  12. Serves as a role model and mentor for students as appropriate
  13. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  1. An earned master’s degree in international or intercultural education, higher education administration, intercultural leadership or management, or a closely related field
  2. One-two years of relevant professional experience
  3. Experience studying, working, or living abroad
  4. Proficiency using Microsoft Office and database applications
  5. Excellent public speaking, presentation, writing and interpersonal skills
  6. Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail
  7. Excellent judgment and ability to deal with difficult and confidential situations, including emergencies and crises abroad
  8. Enthusiasm and experience in working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in a university study abroad or international education office 
  2. Proficiency in a second or foreign language
  3. Recruitment or marketing experience
  4. Experience with federal guidelines and regulations governing international students and scholars
  5. Working knowledge of study abroad enrollment management platforms
