General Statement of Duties

Salem State University, located just 15 miles north of Boston, is one of the largest state universities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and serves as an important partner in the economic, cultural and intellectual vitality of the greater north-of-Boston region.  Salem State provides a diverse community of learners a high quality, student-centered education that prepares them to contribute responsibly and creatively to a global society.


Established in 1854, Salem State University is a comprehensive, publicly assisted institution of higher learning and has a student population of nearly 10,000 and faculty numbering 756, participating in 30 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs.  The University has just completed a successful Capital Campaign, raising more than $25M.  A recent successful search for President led to the development of a University prospectus ( that provides a broad array of information about Salem State University. 


The Bertolon School of Business provides students a high quality, integrated business education within a personalized learning environment that emphasizes intellectual challenge and business relevance. At Bertolon, students develop the skills needed by local, regional, national and international organizations through a rigorous foundation in business and liberal arts. Bertolon is organized into three departments: Accounting and Finance; Management; and, Marketing and Decision Sciences. There are approximately 1,500 students enrolled in undergraduate (11 concentrations) and graduate (2 certificates and an MBA) programs. There are 41 full-time and approximately 27 part-time faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the provost and academic vice president, the dean is the chief academic officer for the school, responsible for leading it into greater prominence through the pursuit of excellence in research and educational programs. The dean is responsible for the academic and research missions of the school including review and approval of all academic programs and policies, as well as the appointment, promotion and development of a diverse faculty and staff. The dean also is responsible for the overall quality of academic and research programs and is expected to develop initiatives in the School that will contribute to the university’s strategic plan. The dean will collaborate as a member of the provost’s leadership team and also will function as a member of the President’s Academic Leadership Cabinet. The Bertolon School is an AACSB aspirant program and is on the cusp of achieving accreditation with an AACSB-assigned mentor and a comprehensive strategic plan. One of the key initial areas of focus for the dean is to successfully lead the school through the final stages of the accreditation process.


Required qualifications for the successful candidate include: an earned doctorate with the scholarly requirements; teaching experience and scholarly contributions to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of professor; demonstrated ability to establish and leverage relationships with business, education, government and other constituencies; and, demonstrated ability to raise philanthropic resources on behalf of an institution of higher education, including the ability to cultivate, solicit and steward significant contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.


In addition, we seek a leader who demonstrates: evidence of visionary leadership in organizational and change management; experience designing and implementing new programs and initiatives; proven ability to lead a complex organization while articulating a clear vision and goals for the future; and, thoughtful organization and deployment of resources in order to achieve strategic ends.  The ideal candidate has strong experience with AACSB accreditation requirements and processes along with the ability to lead within a collective bargaining environment.  Further, the ideal candidate has a creative and entrepreneurial mindset.
