General Statement of Duties

The successful candidate, for this tenure-track position will have a demonstrated track record of scholarly productivity coupled with evidence of teaching excellence in public middle and/or high schools. This full-time, tenure-track, faculty member will be an active contributor to the multi-department team of faculty who prepare secondary education teachers and will teach courses in the combined bachelor's and master's teacher preparation program and the community education program. These courses may include instruction and assessment methods, data-based teaching and assessment, classroom management, curriculum development, program evaluation and planning, and technology for assessment and evaluation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.


Required Qualifications:

  1. Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in an education-related field or closely related content area, and if ABD, will have earned doctorate by September 1, 2018 
  2. Minimum of three years of experience teaching in public school settings, preferably at the secondary level
  3. Well versed in the theoretical foundations of best practices for instruction, curriculum development, instructional methods, assessment, and classroom management, with demonstrated ability to bridge theory and practice for future teachers
  4. Possess a thorough and up to-date knowledge of developmentally and culturally appropriate practices and instruction in secondary education
  5. Experience teaching secondary school students from diverse backgrounds
  6. Evidence of a scholarly agenda in the areas of pedagogy and assessment for secondary school that will lead to contributions to the field
  7. Demonstrated experience preparing candidates to teach culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse secondary level students with or without disabilities
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated research in one or more of the following subfields: the role of assessment and pedagogy in developing, implementing and monitoring student, classroom, school and system-level change; instructional practices to promote meta-cognition and higher-order thinking skills; pedagogical content knowledge; models of educational assessment to increase understanding of learning processes, resource use and outcomes in classrooms, schools, and education systems; and systematic analyses of assessment at national and international levels
  2. Experience preparing educators in teaching, learning and assessment theories and practices
  3. Evidence of scholarly work or publications that point at how assessment is perceived and used by stakeholders (learners, parents, institutions, employers, policy-makers)
  4. Experience using new assessment technologies in test design, test distribution, test administration and results delivery
  5. Experience teaching and/or administration in urban settings
  6. Fluency in a foreign or second language
  7. A demonstrated record of, or potential for, effective teaching in a variety of instructional formats (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, online)
