  • General Statement of Duties

    Salem State University is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach within the Geo-Information Science Graduate Program. Experience with GIS software, a thorough understanding of spatial data, spatial modeling and GPS familiarity are strongly desired. The ability to teach using ESRI products is required. Classes run one evening per week Monday through Thursday during fall and spring semesters, and possibly summer, as enrollment permits. Additional responsibilities may include participation in course assessment, department/program meetings, and meeting all responsibilities/requirements as required for part-time faculty.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The primary responsibility of this individual is to provide high quality instruction to Salem State University students enrolled in the graduate Geo-Information Sciences program.  Courses are taught face-to-face and meet one evening a week. This individual must be able to relate to a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional students from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in the university environment. 
    It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner, and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed.  Duties include:

    • Provide quality instruction to students in assigned course
    • Provide quality learning experiences for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives
    • Provide clear objectives and criteria in a course syllabus; follow University guidelines regarding course syllabi; follow direction of the Division Chair or full-time program lead; integrate the appropriate University's learning goals into course; evaluate students’ performance in light of these objectives and criteria
    • Submit syllabus to department by the end of the first week of class
    • Provide each student with a syllabus that complies with University syllabus guidelines by the end of the first week including all course requirements, course evaluation procedures, attendance requirements, make-up examination policy, and related course procedures
    • Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance. Return graded assignments in a timely fashion, normally within a week
    • Inform students of progress to date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines
    • Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes), including “No Shows” (students who have not shown up for class)
    • Use University software for final and timely reporting, grades, student roster and attendance
    • Maintain regular consultation/office hours for meetings with students on campus


    This posting will be valid for three years to build a sufficient adjunct pool.


    Required Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in a related field, such as Geography, Geology, Planning, or Environmental Science, with at least 18 graduate level credit hours in Geographic Information Systems OR a master's degree in a related field and at least 5 years of direct experience using GIS in industry, government, or academia
    • Knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of the teaching of Geographic Information Systems on a post-secondary level
    • Proficient with ArcGIS and other GIS software or hardware
    • At least 2 years of direct experience using GIS in industry, government, or academia
    • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality
    • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, supervision, and advising
    • Strength and potential for excellence and leadership in community engagement and university services

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • A PhD in a related field, such as Geography, Geology, Planning, or Environmental Science
    • 5+ years of direct experience using GIS in industry, government, or academia
    • Experience in research or application of GIS to environmental and social sustainability issues and problems
    • Experience using open source geospatial software
    • Proficiency with Python for ArcGIS
    • Experience teaching geography and/or geographic information system (GIS) courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs
    • Experience teaching a multicultural population
